To create an irresistible homepage, your hero must do three things:

  • Explain what you do, and quickly. Visitors need to figure out what you do and how you can help them, right away. It’s “dresses for all body types” rather than “a modern clothing store.”
  • Show your value. The image, copy, and visual examples need to express what a visitor will get from your site – why should they keep scrolling?
  • Give one clear call-to-action. Right at the top give visitors a clear call-to-action (CTA). Something like, “Book a consultation,” “shop now,” or “Download your free guide.” You want the CTA to be bold, easy to spot, and clear.

Head it with a headline

Your hero section includes not only a bold, beautiful image but also a headline. The headline should communicate your value in 10 words or fewer. It’s also brief. One or two lines max. If you’re having trouble, you can follow this formula: “[Product or service] helps [client type] [achieve result] without [pain point].” Like, “Ghostwriter Rebekah Moan helps busy therapists amplify their visibility without requiring more hours of their time.”

Close with a CTA

The final part of your hero section should include a CTA button that’s visually prominent (a bright color or large text), uses action-oriented language, and is placed above the fold. You don’t want people to scroll far to be able to reach you. Otherwise, you might lose them.

And of course, you want to use appropriate visuals that match your brand and audience. You also want images that load quickly and scale well on mobile. Speaking of, the majority of people are using their mobile devices to browse the web. (I almost wrote “surf the net” but that would really date me.) That said, you MUST make sure your homepage loads fast on all devices and that means optimizing your images. You don’t want people to scroll to the right to see the entire image.

The other thing to keep in mind for mobile is having tap-friendly buttons, legible fonts, and good color contrast. Some web builders allow you to check how your website will look on multiple devices so you can make changes accordingly. However, you can just as easily try that for yourself on the physical device.
